This and that

Japanese has more than one word for this and that.

[kono] is used right before a person, place, or thing.

Compare these examples :

 

[kore wa kawaii kooto desu]

This is a cute coat.

 

[kono kooto wa kawaii desu]

This coat is cute.

 

Mr. Tanaka is a cheerful person.

[tanaka san wa akarui hito desu]

Naomi Yamaguchi is funny.

[yamaguchi naomi san wa omoshiroi desu.]

That person is funny.

[sono hito wa omoshiroi desu]

[kono hito sono hito]

this person and that person

Mr. Tanaka a cheerful person.

[tanaka san wa akarui hito desu.]

In my family we cook a lot.
